Genioplasty Chin Implants / Surgery

Ideal Candidates

Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty/ Genioplasty, is a surgical procedure that has helped thousands of people improve their appearance by altering the contours of their faces. The best candidates for chin augmentation are individuals with a receding chin and a normal dental bite. If a bite dysfunction is evident it may be necessary to undergo jaw surgery in conjunction with mentoplasty.

Before Surgery

A complete medical history is acquired prior to surgery in order to evaluate the general health of the patient. The patients face will also be carefully examined. After the examination Dr. Graper will explain the type of anesthesia that will be used, the procedure, the expected results, and the possible risks and complications. The next step will be to take photographs, which will allow both the patient and Dr. Graper to evaluate the degree of improvement. The patient will then be given their preoperative instructions and the areas to be operated on will be carefully marked.

The Procedure

There are two basic procedures used in mentoplasty or Genioplasty: one involves moving the chin bone forward and the other requires the use of a plastic chin implant.
The first procedure, moving the bone forward, requires an incision to be made inside the mouth. Dr. Graper works through the incision, using special instruments to cut through the chin bone. The lower portion of the bone is then moved forward and wired to keep it in position. Small sutures are used to close the incision, and external bandages are applied to the area.

The second procedure, a chin implant, may also be used to make a more prominent jaw. This technique allows for the incision to be made either inside the mouth or externally, under the chin. A plastic prosthesis, sized exactly to fit the patient, is placed in a pocket above the chin bone and beneath the muscles. Sutures are used to close the incision and pressure bandages are applied.

Both of the procedures may take from two and a half to three hours or more depending on whether other cosmetic procedures are performed at the same time.
